Some points to remember

Some points to remember in planning your investigations in Hackney Wick.

– Be very clear about the specific codes that you are investigating with each exercise. Define each exercise through the codes that you are looking at. Be specific.

– After identifying the codes, draw out themes that each exercise uncovers – e.g. boundaries, land ownership, identity and so on.

– You are investigating how codes influence spatial production – so focus on the specific ways that they determine how people use space, define space, make claim to space, make buildings etc.

– Whether you are exploring social codes or more formal codes, always pay close attention to the spatial dimension – where is it? who owns the land? are you allowed to be there? etc. etc.

– Combine both performative exercises with more analytical ones, in which you develop a system of how to record a particular code and its affects.
